Leadership

Leadership is more about who you are rather than what you do”. Brian Tracy Picture1

In Business there is nothing more challenging than managing and leading a team of people.  When it comes to people there is no magic formula because everything “just depends”. It depends on so many variables i.e. your personality style, their style, the work at hand, the quality of the relationships between yourself, co-workers and stakeholders, skill sets etc.

if you get good at the people side of business you will never be out of a job“.

Do you ever wonder WHY some people:
  • Need to be thanked for just doing the job they are paid to do?
  • Don’t just tell you what they want, instead go and complain to someone else?
  • Try to find someone to blame instead of owning up when they have made a mistake.
  • Don’t realise that not communicating or contributing in team meetings’ puts pressure on the rest of the team members and sends a message that they don’t care.
  • Seem to be only interested in when they are going to get the next pay rise?
  • Don’t realise that the business can’t survive if they don’t perform?

These are just some of the concerns business owners and leaders have about their employees. Even though there are many different situations that can cause you frustration, there are a few key techniques that deal with many of your concerns.

Let’s look at some qualities of leaders that help deal with these issues:
Leaders impact others.

Firstly leaders need to be comfortable in their own skin.  They need to be confident in their ability to make things better, to positively influence their work environment including their relationships.  They are curious about people and things, are driven to grow and develop, live in the present and have a healthy amount of optimism. So firstly we look at your level of self-confidence, self-esteem, self-awareness and emotional intelligence.

Leaders create the environment within which others operate.

What environment are you creating? When a leader sends a clear message about what we need to achieve; when individuals are encouraged to grow and learn; when teams are supported, listened to and challenged to seek solutions to problems, a constructive culture is created. So we look at how you are delivering your message; is it constructive and engaging; directive and controlling, or unclear and uncertain.

To use a metaphor of “spreading fertilizer on the garden” – What is being fed to your people?

Is it the food that encourages growth?  When a mistake is made what are the consequences?  Are people supported and encouraged, or criticized and blamed.

“One of the most profound things I learnt through coaching with Dianne, was to keep quiet.  I thought that as the leader I had to have all the answers, but I tried putting the idea out there, kept quiet, and I was thrilled to hear the team come up with some great problem solving ideas”!  Warren Spencer  Rio Tinto

Constructive leaders behave in a way that encourages those they interact with to give their best effort on every project.

They communicate challenging yet realistic performance standards, and promote teamwork by consistently seeking input from all team members. They build engaging work environments by balancing concern for getting the job done with consideration for people and their needs.

A leaders job is to get the organizations needs met, to get the team members needs met and to get their own needs met”
